The Wye Valley School is a smaller than average, non-selective school in a selective system. It has a unit for students on the autistic spectrum with communication difficulties. There is a higher proportion of students with learning difficulties than is the case generally. Few pupils are at an early stage of learning English. The school gained specialist school status in sports in 1998 and in vocational studies in 2006. A newly opened building has provided much needed library space and well equipped teaching rooms.
