Smestow is an average-sized secondary school and serves a diverse socio-economic area. Ittakes students from the community of south Wolverhampton. Almost a third of the pupils arefrom minority ethnic backgrounds, mainly of Indian or Caribbean origin. The school includes aresource base for 11 visually impaired students who are fully integrated into the school. Theproportion of students who have learning difficulties and/or disabilities is below the nationalaverage, although the proportion who have statements of special educational needs is higher.The school was designated a sports college in 2004 and English was introduced as a secondspecialism in 2007. Post-16 provision is supported by a consortium with three other schools.
