Doncaster Road Primary School serves a former mining community near the centre of Barnsley. It is larger than average. It serves an area of significant social and economic disadvantage and a high proportion of pupils are eligible for free school meals. The majority of pupils are from White British families and a small number are from African, Asian and Eastern European backgrounds. Most pupils speak English as their first language. The percentage of pupils with learning difficulties and/or disabilities is average. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision includes Nursery and Reception classes. Two thirds of the staff are new to the school since the previous inspection. The school has received a Silver Healthy Schools award and a CARA award for imaginative play development.
