The Cleveland Unit Child Development Centre & Assessment Nursery operates from a modern, purpose built unit in The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and provides joint education, therapy and care for children who have significant special educational needs and disabilities. Children must be referred into the provision and referrals are considered at a multi-disciplinary referral meeting. The children have their own separate entrance to the nursery. There are four classrooms within the unit and children also have their own outdoor play areas and specialist areas including a sensory light room and sensory movement room. The unit also offers joint education and therapy groups for younger children and their parents/carers as well as multi-disciplinary developmental assessments. It has been registered at this site since July 2003 but has been operating since 1961, originally on the site of Middlesbrough General Hospital.
